The Top End’s award-winning major events season arrives with a bang in May each year, and an epic line-up of AFL and the Territory’s biggest music festival will kick things off in Darwin in 2024.
Footy fans will be spoilt for choice with two Darwin AFL games in six days. The Gold Coast SUNS will take on North Melbourne at TIO Stadium on Saturday, 11 May 2024. This game will be followed by a clash between the SUNS and Geelong on Thursday, 16 May, as part of the celebrated Sir Doug Nicholls Round. The Northern Territory has produced some of the game’s most skilled and revered Indigenous players, and the Indigenous round sees enthusiastic support from the Territory’s passionate footy fans.
Giving travelling footy fans even more reasons to head to Darwin, the BASSINTHEGRASS Music Festival takes place just two days after the second SUNS match, on Saturday, 18 May 2024. Set to attract thousands of music lovers to iconic Mindil Beach, BASSINTHEGRASS has recently signed international recording superstar Macklemore. The full line-up will be announced soon.
In addition to the Gold Coast SUNS games, Melbourne Football Club will head to the stunning Red Centre for a match. They will face Fremantle at TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs on Sunday, 2 June 2024.
The AFL games, supported by Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC), are part of the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to bringing elite sport to the Territory. The agreement will see three AFL games played in the Territory each year from 2024-26.
