Freeview welcomes the launch of TVS digital broadcasting
Freeview, Australia’s free digital television service, has welcomed the launch of digital broadcasting by community TV station TVS (Television Sydney).
On March 1, TVS became the first community TV station in Australia to begin simulcasting both digital and analogue signals, almost exactly four years after TVS started broadcasting as an analogue-only station.
Available on digital channel 44, TVS offers viewers a wide range of free-to-view programmes, with a large amount of content developed and produced by and for members of Sydney’s many and varied communities.
Freeview CEO Robin Parkes said: “We’re delighted to see the arrival of digital broadcasting of community television in Australia and congratulate TVS on the launch of its simulcasts.
“Community TV is a vibrant and increasingly significant part of the television industry in Australia, and the launch of TVS in digital means viewers in Sydney can now see their favourite community programmes in digital, and for free,” she said.
“This takes to 17 the number of free-to-view digital channels available in Sydney, providing a wider choice of free programmes than ever seen before,” she added.
More than 40 per cent of content on TVS is made in Sydney, with another 30 Per cent coming from other community TV stations around Australia. The launch of TVS in digital has been enabled by the Federal Government’s move in 2009 to provide funding support and spectrum allocation for community TV.
Other community TV stations expected to begin free digital broadcasting in the coming months are C31 Melbourne, C31 Adelaide, QCTV Brisbane and WTV Perth.
